ARTISTS SUBMISSIONS ARE NOW CLOSED
City Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam and community partners including Tourism Toronto, the Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives and StreetARToronto seek to hold an open public art competition to commemorate the history and achievements of the diverse LGBTTI2QQ communities through mural art. These works will be featured on prominent building locations in the Church-Wellesley Village.
The Church-Wellesley Village has a rich LGBTTI2QQ activist and cultural history which dates back as early as 1810. Organizations like the Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives have worked tirelessly to record our histories. This mural art project will build upon this knowledge by fostering the creation of murals to commemorate these stories and the many diverse communities that have shaped the sexual liberation and LGBTQ human rights movement.
Currently, the Church-Wellesley Village is undergoing both long-term revitalization and short-term enhancements in preparation for World Pride 2014. The Church Street Mural Project will be a visually stunning and high-profile way to commemorate LGBTQ histories while beautifying the neighbourhood.
Toronto’s Church-Wellesley Village is one of the most vibrant, colourful and unique neighbourhoods in Canada. It is the annual hub for Toronto Pride Week, the city’s largest festival and Canada’s largest LGBTTI2QQ event. Pride Toronto records show that approximately one million visitors come to the area during the festival. In 2014, Pride Toronto will be hosting World Pride, a city-wide international event with the Church-Wellesley Village at its heart. Expectations are that World Pride 2014 will see a significant increase in attendance, placing Church Street in the centre of one of largest ever tourist and cultural celebrations in the world.
The locations identified for the mural art are on street-facing buildings from Carlton Street to Isabella Street. The murals will vary in size and dimensions to take advantage of the unique architectural opportunities presented by participating buildings. The building surfaces are diverse and can have various treatments made to them. Electrical supply will be provided where needed. We encourage submissions from LGBTQ artists working in various mediums including mural, relief, two-dimensional graphic, multi-media and light-based works.
